A Gift Never Refused: Gifting in Islam and Perfume Gift Sets
In Gulf homes, a guest rarely leaves before the fragrance comes round: a spray of perfume, a touch of oud oil on the palm, or an incense burner passed around the majlis. The custom is older than many realise, with clear roots in the Prophetic Sunnah, which made gifts a path to love and made perfume a gift never to be refused. Here we return to the authentic texts on gifting in Islam, see why perfume in particular held such a special place, and then apply that to choosing a perfume gift set worthy of someone you love.
"Give gifts and you will love one another": gifts in the Sunnah
The best-known narration on gifts comes from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ: "Tahādaw taḥābbū" — give gifts to one another and you will love one another. Al-Bukhari recorded it in al-Adab al-Mufrad, in the chapter on accepting gifts, and Shaykh al-Albani graded it hasan (good) [1]. Two words that sum up a whole philosophy: a gift is not only material value, but a message of love passed from hand to hand.
The Prophet's practice completes the picture. Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to accept gifts and give something in return", as recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari [2]. Gifting, in this sense, is a two-way bond: a gift received with joy, and returned with a gift.
Why perfume in particular?
Of all gifts, the Sunnah treats perfume in a special way. In Sahih al-Bukhari, under a chapter titled "Gifts that should not be refused", Thumamah ibn Abdullah reports that Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) never refused perfume, and Anas said: "The Prophet ﷺ used not to refuse perfume" [3].
In Sahih Muslim, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever is offered fragrant basil (rayhan) should not refuse it, for it is light to carry and pleasant in scent" [4]. The hadith itself gives the reason: a gift of scent is light on the one who receives it and a pleasure to everyone who smells it. In a sense, the ideal gift: little burden, lasting effect.
Did you know?
In Sahih Muslim, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet ﷺ described musk as "the best of perfumes" [5].
That is one reason musk has remained the king of scents in Arab and Islamic taste, and why it sits at the base of so many fine fragrances today.
Notice the chain in the narration of Anas: Thumamah never refused perfume because he saw Anas never refuse it, and Anas never refused it because he saw the Prophet ﷺ never refuse it. A custom passed from generation to generation, still alive in our gatherings today.
The etiquette of gifting, as these texts suggest
- Give for love, not for show: "give gifts and you will love one another" makes drawing hearts closer the purpose, so meaning comes before price.
- Accept with joy and reciprocate: the Prophet ﷺ accepted gifts and gave in return, so returning kindness is part of gifting.
- Do not refuse perfume: if you are given a fragrance, accept it; it is Prophetic guidance and refined manners.
- Give fine scent: describing musk as "the best of perfumes" reminds us to give the best we can.
These are general manners drawn from the plain meaning of the narrations. For detailed rulings on gifts, refer to qualified scholars.
Boadicea sets: four fine perfumes in one gift
Boadicea the Victorious is a British house named after the warrior queen Boadicea, known for rich compositions and shield-adorned bottles. It has a special familiarity for the Gulf: its perfumes include Nemer, Almas and Oud Sapphire, and oud, amber and saffron appear across many of its compositions.
Boadicea's gift sets share one idea: four perfumes with full personalities, each in a 10ml bottle, united by one fragrance family. Instead of giving one perfume, you give a journey through four scents from a fine niche house, in an elegant box ready for gifting, with small bottles easy to carry in a bag or on a trip.
Boadicea The Ambery Gift Set (4 × 10ml)
Nemer, Hasu, Defender and Blue Sapphire: spices, resins, balsams and incense in an amber warmth that unfolds layer by layer, as if returning from the ancient spice routes. The closest to majlis taste and winter nights.
Boadicea Bestsellers Gift Set (4 × 10ml)
Blue Sapphire with saffron and rose over oud and amber, Complex 2020 with leather and frankincense, Valiant with orange blossom and vanilla, and Glorious with fruit and cardamom over warm woods. Four of the house's best-known scents in one box.
Boadicea New Discovery Gift Set (4 × 10ml)

How to choose the right Boadicea set
- Start from the family they love: amber and incense? oud and saffron? leather? woods? roses? Boadicea has a full set for each, so pick from the table above.
- Match the set to the occasion: for Eid, the majlis and winter nights, The Ambery, New Discovery or Leather. For daytime and the office, The Citrus. For a wife or mother, The Floral.
- If unsure, go for the best-known: the Bestsellers set gathers four of the house's most famous scents, a safe choice for any lover of fine fragrance.
- Add a handwritten note: a short card saying why you chose this scent for them turns the gift into a complete message of love, the heart of "give gifts and you will love one another".
